Goblin Dice - Game Boy Prototype
DISCLAIMER: GOBLIN DICE IS A PROTOTYPE I PROBABLY SPENT TOO MUCH TIME ON JUST TO PROVE TO MYSELF I COULD DO IT. SOMETIMES IT JUST SEEMS TO RANDOMLY BREAK BECAUSE IT'S TOO POWERFUL!
THE GAME WILL AUTO SAVE AFTER EACH BATTLE JUST IN CASE!
---
Weary from a day of travel, you make camp in the woods. Yet before your can drift off to sleep you're ambushed by goblins. As their hostage, there's only one way to earn your freedom, beating them at their own game.
Goblin Dice is a reverse roguelike blackjack style game played with a set of 6 dice. Use your spells to manipulate the totals and cheat your way to victory, at least until the goblins get frustrated.
Defeat 16 semi-randomized opponents to earn your freedom and pick up a pile of Goblin Bucks in the process. Though you're not sure of any stores that accept them as legal tender.

I’m not really sure why this is listed as a prototype rather than a full game. It seems to be crashing for a lot of people but I must be getting lucky since I didn’t experience a single crash over two playthroughs. Maybe it crashes on real hardware… Anyway the game is really fun. I love the aesthetic and Blackjack is fun already so this just adds to it with the spells. This achieves a great level of balance between randomness with the dice rolling and how different spells are removed each playthrough (they seem to be the ones you use the most but I’m not sure) and strategy with the spells and how they carry over to subsequent games so you’re always planning ahead
Glad you enjoyed it! Even on the desktop version of GB Studio I was using to test it during development it ran into a lot of issues with crashes, so I figured it was safer to list it as a demo. But it was a fun project for me to learn to do a lot of the more nitty gritty functions of GB studio.
Wanted to say that this is a wonderful little game. The aesthetic & style are perfect, there's a lovely balance of strategy & luck, a modest skill curve for knowing when to best use which spell, and I love the sense of humor.
Fantastic experience, all around. I see your comment elsewhere stating you have no plans to do anything else with this, and I soundly ignore it.
(Jokes aside, this would make for a great minigame addition to a larger project, in the future.)
Thank you for the lovely time.
I appreciate the kind words! It's funny you mention it'd be fun as a minigame in a larger project, because the initial concept was adapted from "Baldur's Bones" a two paragraph description of a bar game in the D&D Descent Into Avernus campaign book.
Good thing that I learned probabilities at university. Anyway, couldn't get to the part where you kiss the goblins without the game crashing.
Damn if I knew I got to kiss the goblins I would've tried harder to fix the crashes.
Hi, are you going to maintain and fix the game further?
I appreciate the interest, but I do not plan to update this title further. This will stay in a prototype state as I plan to move onto other game projects.
🤔
Yeah, sadly a known issue. I'm asking the Game Boy to do a bit too much, which is why this is only a prototype instead of a full release.
